Taking Time Seriously

Paul Grogan, an Australian human resources manager living and working in London, recalled the frustration of a new finance manager who had started a rotational role in Algeria. He was working one month on and one month off.

His role was to move the company’s operations from Houston to Algeria, and in that role he was seen as hardworking, conscientious, and destined to move up the ladder. He hit the ground hard and wanted to get everything done within his first four-week rotation since he knew that he would be off for four weeks and did not want his replacement, who would cover the next four weeks, to have to do any work that was left over from his stint. In Houston, he was appreciated and rewarded for being focused on deadlines, solving issues quickly, getting the numbers under control, and getting the reports out on time.
